Torre de Belem (Mindelo, São Vicente) – this is a replica of the same tower in Portugal (located within the fish market area of this town). Under Portuguese rule, this building acted as the harbor master’s office for Mindelo port. Nowadays, the space within the tower’s lobby is occasionally used for photo exhibits.

Sé Catedral (Cidade Velha, Santiago) – this cathedral, completed in 1693, had a short life, since it was destroyed by French pirate Jacques Cassard when he raided this island in 1712. As a result, just a few of the old walls remain.

São Vicente (island)

São Vicente (island) – this is another of Cape Verde’s barren islands. Its gem is the natural harbor that became the island capital of Mindelo. Mindelo is considered the cultural center of Cape Verde (complete with a lively café culture and decent restaurants). The beachside “Baia das Gatas Music Festival” is held here every August.
