São Nicolau (island)

São Nicolau (island) – this island contrasts between the picturesque town of Ribeira Brava on the western part (with its colonial architecture and colorful fertile gardens), and the eastern part, whose settlements are more impoverished and barren (reinforced by a ridge of stony mountains and volcanic craters). That side of the island also has numerous abandoned farm houses and villages. Eco-tourists are most likely to be attracted to Mount Gordo (located at that island’s central massif), which includes hiker-friendly cobbled paths.
